Safe Soulmates is an NHS England approved provider and Skills for Care approved provider of the Oliver McGowan Training on Learning Disability and Autism. If you are an adult social care provider, you can commision us to deliver and claim your training costs back from the Learning and Development Support Scheme Funding.

This training was created following the death of Oliver McGowan at the age of 18 and exists to ensure health and social care staff have the right knowledge, understanding and attitudes when supporting people with a learning disability and autistic people.

For parents and carers the training helps you understand
• What staff are legally required to know and do
• What good safe and reasonable care should look like
• How to confidently advocate for your loved one
• How to work in partnership with professionals using shared language

This training is important for everyone. It helps build safer, kinder and more inclusive services, improves communication, reduces misunderstanding and supports better outcomes for people using services staff and families alike. By increasing understanding across health and social care we can reduce inequality, improve trust and help prevent avoidable harm for all.

Together we can prevent the many avoidable deaths like Oliver’s from happening again. The animation on the right aims to help staff and employers across health and social care to understand Oliver’s Training and why it is so vitally important.

 Background

The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism is named after Oliver McGowan, whose death shone a light on the need for health and social care staff to have better training. The Health and Care Act 2022 introduced a statutory requirement that regulated service providers must ensure their staff receive learning disability and autism training appropriate to their role.

How the NHS is using it

The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training is the standardised training that was developed for this purpose and is the government’s preferred and recommended training for health and social care staff.

Oliver’s Training also supports the NHS Long Term Workforce Plan ambition by upskilling the wider health and care workforce to provide appropriately adjusted care for people with a learning disability and autistic people to reduce health inequality.
